Santorini Glow: Sunsets, Sea, and Timeless Romance

Santorini has captured our hearts long time ago with its breathtaking sunsets, charming whitewashed buildings, and crystal-clear waters, making it the ultimate haven for romance. If you are planning a trip to this magical island, we are happy to share with you our favorite romantic spots, gorgeous beaches, and things to do in Santorini, each promising unforgettable moments that are dear to us.

As you may know, Santorini is well renowned for its stunning sunsets, offering several vantage points where the sky and sea meet in a spectacular display of colors.

Here are our top spots to watch the sunset in Santorini:

  1. Oia: Definitely one of the most famous spots for sunset lovers, Oia’s sunset captivates with its dramatic views over the caldera. The ruins of Oia Castle are particularly popular, offering an unobstructed view of the sun dipping into the Aegean Sea. As it can get very crowded during sunset time, we recommend to secure your sunset spot a little earlier!

  2. Fira: The capital of Santorini, Fira, offers breathtaking sunset views from its cliff-top terraces. The mix of the caldera, the volcano, and the changing sky creates a magical backdrop.

  3. Imerovigli: Known as the "Balcony to the Aegean," Imerovigli sits at the highest point of the caldera cliffs. Its Skaros Rock provides a unique setting for watching the sunset in a more peaceful environment.

  4. Akrotiri Lighthouse: For those seeking a quieter spot away from the crowds, the area around Akrotiri Lighthouse is ideal. It offers a serene sunset experience with panoramic views of the sea.

  5. Santo Winery: Enjoy a glass of local wine while watching the sunset from this winery in Pyrgos. Its terrace offers expansive views of the caldera, making it a perfect spot for a romantic evening.

  6. Amoudi Bay: Located below Oia, Amoudi Bay offers a different perspective for sunset viewing. Watch the sun set over the water, and enjoy a seaside dinner at one of the local tavernas.

Beaches we liked:

  1. Red Beach: Famous for its striking red volcanic rocks and sand, Red Beach offers a dramatic contrast to the blue Aegean Sea. It's a must-visit for its unique landscape, though access requires a bit of a walk.

  2. Kamari Beach: With its long stretch of black pebble beach and clear waters, Kamari is one of the most popular beaches in Santorini. The beach is well-organized, offering sunbeds, umbrellas, and a variety of water sports.

  3. Perissa Beach: Similar to Kamari, Perissa features black volcanic sand and crystal-clear waters. It's lined with cafes, bars, and restaurants, making it a lively spot for beachgoers. The towering Mesa Vouno rock adds a dramatic backdrop.

  4. Perivolos Beach: Connected to Perissa, Perivolos is known for its dark sand, clear waters, and vibrant beach bars. It's a great place for those looking to enjoy the sun by day and party atmosphere by night.

  5. Vlychada Beach: Also known as "Moon Beach," Vlychada is renowned for its white volcanic cliffs that resemble a moonscape. The beach has a more secluded feel, perfect for those seeking tranquility.

During our trip we stayed in two different places, Imerovigli and Oia. We absolutely loved both of them but noticed that Imerovigli feels more remote and less crowded since it sits higher on the caldera, and directly faces west, revealing stunning unobstructed views! While Oia feels more touristy, busy and a little pricier to stay in.

Restaurants We Loved

Santorini's restaurant scene is as mesmerizing as its sunsets, offering a blend of traditional Greek flavors, fresh seafood, and international cuisines, all accompanied by the island's stunning views. Here's a taste of what we loved the most:

  1. Beefbar Santorini. Great and probably the best restaurant spot to watch the sunset, phenomenal service, great food but definitely on a pricey side).

  2. La Colline Restaurant. Fabulous restaurant with stunning views, the best choice for a romantic experience, all tables are the front row - so you’re guaranteed to have killer views.

  3. The Cave of Stolida. Cute little laid back family tavern with a very good food, excellent service and beautiful views.
