Now is a great time to explore South America with a strong dollar, peaceful politics, and the start of Spring. The region offers a blend of vibrant cultures, breathtaking landscapes, and enriching experiences. If you plan ahead and pay attention to the following suggestions, you’ll also be able to do it on a budget.

As a native South American, I have a strong connection with this beautiful, friendly and historic region. It offers some of the best international destinations for families and people of all ages. Within an hour or two you could be sunbathing in the sands of Argentina or Uruguay, and then visiting a glacier or waterfalls in the amazon.

As Spring arrives in the southern hemisphere (with December beginning the busier summer season that lasts through March), now is a perfect time to visit in order to take advantage of travel deals, fewer tourists and the beautiful spring season.

1. Quito, Ecuador

Quito, the capital of Ecuador, is a city rich in history and culture. Nestled in the Andes, it offers stunning views and numerous affordable attractions. Great for hikers, campers, and explorers alike. Like Perú and Bolivia, these countries offer beautiful landscape and the ability to experience life inspired by the Incas.

Where to Stay: Hotel Casa Gardenia has great views and is close to the historic center.

Getting There: Mariscal Sucre International Airport is the main gateway to Quito. The airport is well-connected to the city center by buses and taxis, making travel easy and affordable.

2. La Paz, Bolivia

La Paz is a cheap city in South America with interesting terrain and lively markets. The city offers a variety of cultural and historical sites that won't break the bank.

Where to Stay: For a relatively quiet experience, try Casa Grande Hotel, which provides comfortable rooms and great service.

Getting There: El Alto International Airport serves La Paz. Taxis and shared minibusses are available for convenient and inexpensive transportation to the city.

3. Cusco, Peru

Cusco, the gateway to Machu Picchu, is rich in history and culture. Despite its popularity, it remains one of the best budget destinations in South America. When you go, make sure to take a few days to acclimate to the elevation before beginning your hikes in Machu Picchu, Rainbow Mountain or any of the other must-see destinations. Where to Stay: Aranwa Cusco Boutique Hotel is just 3.5 mi (5.6 km) from the airport and offers a shuttle (available 24 hours). The bar is a good spot for drinks.

Guests can also try Mishti Mestizo Restaurant for local food. It's open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Getting There: Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport is the main airport in Cusco. Taxis and buses offer convenient access to the city center.

4. Buenos Aires, Argentina

Buenos Aires, the vibrant capital of Argentina, combines European charm with Latin flair. It's an affordable city with a wealth of cultural and historical sites. I lived here for a few years when I was young and still return every year to reconnect.

Buenos Aires is often called the Paris of South America. The city offers amazing food prepared by top chefs. It also has beautiful parks for residents and visitors to enjoy. The lifestyle in Buenos Aires is known for being relaxed.

Getting There: Ministro Pistarini International Airport (Ezeiza) is the primary international gateway. The city is well-served by public transportation, including buses and trains, ensuring affordable travel.

Where to Stay: Miravida Soho Hotel & Wine Bar is just 4.3 mi (6.8 km) from the airport and offers a shuttle (available 24 hours). Guests looking for a bite to eat can check out the coffee shop/cafe, and the bar/lounge is the perfect spot to grab a drink at the end of the day.

For families, solo explorers and outdoorsie people, I highly recommend visiting the Iguazu Falls. Just a couple hours’ flight from Buenos Aires, its one of Argentina's natural wonders.

Located in Iguazu National Park on the Argentina-Brazil border, this stunning series of waterfalls spans nearly two miles and is surrounded by lush rainforest. Explore walking trails and viewing platforms for awe-inspiring views, including the famous Devil's Throat. For an unforgettable experience, take a boat ride to feel the power of the cascading water up close. With well-maintained facilities and guided tours, Iguazu Falls is a safe and exhilarating destination for tourists of all ages.

5. Medellín, Colombia

Medellín, known as the "City of Eternal Spring," offers a pleasant climate and numerous attractions. The city has transformed into a safe and welcoming destination for travelers.

Stay at Hotel Poblado Plaza, a great location just a 5-minute walk from Oviedo Shopping Center and Santafé Mall.
