I recently returned from a trip to Boston and NYC, two cities that always leave me inspired. Although I grew up on the West Coast, spending over 20 years in New York taught me to truly appreciate everything the East Coast has to offer. Today, I want to take you on a road trip along the Atlantic, sharing some of my favorite cities and hidden gems along the way.
Buckle up, and let’s set off on an unforgettable journey where each stop reveals a new layer of American charm, culture, and adventure. Our first destination? The enchanting streets of Savannah, Georgia.
Savannah, Georgia
With its moss-draped oak trees and cobblestone streets, Savannah feels like stepping back in time. Once a bustling colonial trade hub, the city now attracts visitors who come for its historic architecture and tales of the past. Wander through its squares, and you’ll uncover stories of independence, resilience, and tradition etched into every building.
Savannah has beautiful old buildings and green parks, making it a top travel spot in the US. Perfect for exploring on foot or by trolley, Savannah offers both charm and affordability. Don’t miss Forsyth Park or a spooky ghost tour for a bit of thrilling history.

Charleston, South Carolina
Heading north, the charm of the South reaches its peak in Charleston, South Carolina. Known for its pastel-colored homes, vibrant culinary scene, and rich history, this city offers a perfect blend of sophistication and hospitality.
Why Visit: With its historic district, cobblestone streets, and antebellum houses, Charleston exudes Southern charm. Enjoy a carriage ride or a boat tour, and indulge in the city’s renowned culinary scene. This city ranks high among the safest travel destinations and is a favorite for single female travelers.
Charleston’s bohemian vibe makes it perfect for the solo hipster traveler. Wander through the historic French Quarter, browsing the many independent art galleries and quirky shops. Enjoy a farm-to-table brunch at Butcher & Bee, known for its creative, locally sourced dishes. Take a bike ride along the picturesque Battery Promenade and White Point Garden.
You can also explore the quaint town of Manteo with its indie bookstores and artisanal shops. For a unique dining experience, head to The Blue Point in Duck, where you can enjoy fresh, local seafood with a stunning sunset view.

Where to Stay: The Sanderling Resort, a 4-star hotel, offers beachfront elegance. I mean, take a look at this view – you won’t easily beat it anywhere and in a decade it may be washed away in the ocean so come visit soon.
Asheville, North Carolina
Why Visit: Asheville is a haven for adventurers with its vibrant arts scene and proximity to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Explore the Biltmore Estate and enjoy the stunning views along the Blue Ridge Parkway. It’s also known for being one of the safest travel destinations in the country.
Asheville is a hipster haven with its vibrant arts scene and progressive culture. Start your day with a coffee from High Five Coffee before exploring the River Arts District, home to numerous studios and galleries. Enjoy a vegan lunch at Plant, one of the city’s top-rated eateries. Hike the scenic trails of the Blue Ridge Mountains for some fresh air and breathtaking views.
In the evening, check out a show at The Orange Peel, a popular music venue. Finish your day with a craft beer from one of Asheville’s many breweries, like Burial Beer Co., known for its innovative brews.

Washington, D.C.
Why Visit: The capital city shines in spring during the National Cherry Blossom Festival. Enjoy free access to museums and monuments, and explore the city by bike for a flexible and convenient tour. Washington, D.C., is not only a cultural hub but also among the safest travel destinations for tourists.
Washington, D.C. offers a rich blend of history and hipster culture for the solo traveler. Explore the offbeat neighborhoods of Shaw and Adams Morgan, filled with trendy cafes, vintage shops, and street art. Visit the Hirshhorn Museum for contemporary art and sculpture. Enjoy a meal at Busboys and Poets, a café that doubles as a bookstore and performance space.
Rent a bike and ride along the National Mall, stopping by local farmers’ markets. In the evening, catch an indie film at the Landmark E Street Cinema and unwind with a cocktail at The Gibson, a chic speakeasy.
Where to Stay: The Kimpton Hotel Palomar Washington DC offers chic accommodations. Nothing screams politics and government than the roman architecture and palacial exuberance of this Kimpton property.
New York City
Reasons to Visit: New York City has a lot to offer, including Central Park, Broadway shows, and top-notch museums. Use the subway for efficient travel and immerse yourself in the city’s vibrant neighborhoods. New York City is also among the best travel destinations for single females with the amount of single, eligible finance, advertising and tech professionals.
Spend your afternoon at MoMA PS1, an art institution in Queens featuring cutting-edge contemporary works. In the evening, grab a craft cocktail at Please Don’t Tell, a hidden speakeasy, and catch a live music show at Bowery Ballroom.
Where to Stay: Hotel prices in NYC are at all time highs. So, select carefully if you’re on a budget. I like Ameritania Hotel at Times Square as it’s comfortable, well priced and centrally located.

Boston, Massachusetts
Why Visit: Known for its rich history and colonial charm, Boston is perfect for history buffs and modern explorers alike. Walk the Freedom Trail or explore the Seaport District’s contemporary attractions. Boston remains one of the best vacation destinations in the USA for its unique blend of the old and new.
Boston’s blend of historic charm and modern cool is ideal for the solo hipster traveler. Start with a coffee from Tatte Bakery & Café, then explore the indie shops and galleries in the South End’s SoWa Art + Design District. Walk or bike along the scenic Charles River Esplanade. For lunch, try Clover Food Lab, a popular vegetarian spot known for its innovative fare.
Spend your afternoon at the Institute of Contemporary Art, located on the waterfront. In the evening, check out the live music scene at The Sinclair in Cambridge and enjoy a craft beer at Trillium Brewing Company.
Where to Stay: The Godfrey Hotel Boston provides stylish and comfortable accommodations in the Theater District near Back Bay at a very good price. I’ve also just stayed in the Cambria Hotel near the Seaport. This is also a very comfortable hotel near the Seaport and main attractions without spending an exorbitant amount. Both have good gyms with all the necessary equipment so you can get a great workout even in the winter.
If you have the opportunity, and you like meat, I highly recommend the OAK Long Bar + Kitchen in Back Bay. The food and scene are top notch. We had the Ossobuco and can attest that it lived up to old school Italian recipes.
Maine’s Coastal Towns
Why Visit: Maine’s coastal towns are perfect for scenic drives and charming atmospheres. Portland offers vibrant arts and delicious seafood, while Acadia National Park provides breathtaking views and outdoor activities. Maine is a top pick for those seeking exotic travel destinations within the US.
Maine’s coastal towns offer a serene yet hipster-friendly escape for the solo traveler. Start in Portland, where you can grab a coffee at Tandem Coffee Roasters before exploring the Old Port’s cobblestone streets and indie boutiques. Visit the Portland Museum of Art for a mix of classic and contemporary works.
Head to Camden for its scenic harbor and unique shops. Enjoy fresh seafood at Eventide Oyster Co., known for its creative takes on classic dishes.
Don’t miss a visit to Acadia National Park for hiking and stunning coastal views. In the evening, relax with a local craft beer at Maine Beer Company in Freeport.
