Tiny House Decor Tips For Maximizing Space
Greetings, my fellow tiny home lover! If you’re thinking about—or have already jumped into the world of tiny houses, then you understand it’s an incredible journey but comes with its fair share of problems.
Living in a confined area requires a person to creatively utilize every inch of space. Whether you are trying to declutter or looking to enhance the perception of space in your small house, smart design is essential.
In this post, I’m going to illustrate some of the space saving tiny house decor tips I have picked up over time.
These tips will aid in increasing the functional space of your home while also allowing you to express your creativity.
Small living is often perceived as a lack of comfort and decorative appeal, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right decisions, the tiny house gives the impression you want it to, while actually being cozy and personal.
The Realities of Tiny House Living: A Balancing Act
We can all agree on one thing: “Going small” does seem simple and suggests saving money and living a sustainable life.
However, once you shift into a tiny house, the truth will hit you hard. You will understand that space is limited and organization super precious.
With that being said, trying to organize all your necessities in a small space will make you feel overwhelmed, and trust me, clutter can sneak up on you way sooner than expected.
When moving into a tiny home for the first time, I couldn’t hold back the excitement of downsizing.
The reality, however, set in rather quickly that every single item I possessed needed to make sense in one way or the other, and choosing the wrong items could lead the living space to feel claustrophobic. The trick lies not in just filling a space, but doing so effectively.
Tips for organizing a tiny house will help you achieve a sense of spaciousness and outline a comfortable atmosphere in which you will feel organized, not claustrophobic.
Function Over Form: How to Make Every Inch Count
Here is the most important thing I learned while designing my tiny house: function comes first.
Aesthetics are crucial to a home’s design, but in situations where space is extremely limited, practicality must take precedence over beauty.
When decorating my tiny house, space-saving furniture was self-evidently the best choice.
Desks and tables that incorporate storage, couches that transform into beds, and coffee tables that open to reveal concealed storage make my life so much easier given that I have limited space. Such furniture pieces are highly practical and provide a lot of help in space-efficient living situations.
This isn’t the end of the story, however. In the case of tiny homes, the furniture needs to be practical, but the arrangement also matters.
Is the area intended for work? Entertainment? Or pure relaxation? The arrangement, comprehensively speaking, should help you navigate freely without needing to push items aside while having every essential item within a short distance.
The Color Palette: How Colors Influence Your Space
The colors used are vital in masking your optically small home. It was a lesson I learned the hard way while attempting to decorate using darker hues.
They might create a snug feeling to a room, but in a small space, it can lead to being cramped. That is when I decided to switch to lighter, more reflective colors for my walls and furniture.
Lighter colors like white, cream, and soft blue will further open up a room and reflect greater amounts of light.
This improves the atmosphere of the room, making it feel brighter and more oxygenated.
But, that does not mean your tiny house has to be lifeless. By employing smaller accent pieces such as pillows, colorful rugs, or vivid art pieces, festive sparks can be injected without overcrowding. The important part here is the balance – overall need to be light and bright with warm accent tones.
Maximizing Vertical Space: Don't Forget the Walls
When residing in a tiny house the concern is not only what is on the floor, but also what is above your head. Considered vertical space is one of the most overlooked aspects of maximizing storage and keeping things organized.
In my tiny house, I noticed right away that the walls were my greatest asset.
I started utilizing upper sections of the walls as book, plant and decor item storage. Mounted coat hooks for outerwear, bags, and even kitchen tools kept the area tidy. The bathroom was no exception; it had mounted storage for toiletries which greatly decluttered the sink area.
The vertical space creates an illusion of height which makes the room feel less claustrophobic.
There is always room for additional storage. Selecting tall furniture, such as bookcases and cabinets, ensures more can be stored while taking up minimal floor space. The secret is thinking outside the box and utilizing every available space, even the one above you.
Lighting: The Secret to Making Your Space Feel Bigger
Of all the tiny house decor tricks I learned, “lighting” might just be the most powerful. It literally changes the atmosphere of a room and creates an illusion of more space.
What I did in my tiny house was ensure that windows allow as much light as possible. Captivating natural light is abundant, but if it is in the form of heavy drapes and curtains, it’s best to remove them. Privacy doesn’t have to sacrificed, as maximum light can come in through sheer blinds as well. No need to worry if you live in a tiny house with fewer windows; artificial lights can do wonders too.
Create depth by layering your lights. Use ambient lighting to brighten the entire area, followed with task lighting for more specific areas such as your kitchen or workspace.
Accent lighting such as small lamps or picture lights can be used to shine special features in your home.
In my case, placing a large mirror directly opposite the window enhanced the room's natural light and increased the brightness of my living area, giving the illusion that it was double in size
Customizing Your Decor: Reflect Your Personal Style
The tiny house is your personal space and it should feel like one. However, I learned that decorating a small space does not mean heaving everything you own into it. Maintaining a calm atmosphere is key and it begins by simplicity.
When I moved in, I made sure to incorporate a few essential items that reflected my style. All it took was a throw blanket that I loved, a piece of art that I even adored, and a few plants for my tiny house to feel truly mine. It was important to me that I did not overcrowd the space with too many decor items.
Therefore, I made sure every item, whether functional or beautiful, served some purpose.
In my case, and in terms of decor, minimalism became a guiding principle. The less you add, the more your space can breathe; this isn’t to suggest that your home needs to feel empty. Rather, it just needs to feel calm and peaceful
The Power of Organization: Keeping Clutter at Bay
The biggest enemy in a tiny home is clutter, which is something I initially struggled with. I understood that comfort in my living space comes from regular maintenance and organizing.
Creatively maintaining order in your life can be the most powerful tool towards controlling the clutter in your life.
Things such as under-bed storage, multifunctional furniture, and other hidden compartments can help everyday objects remain organized.
Having less personal belongings can make it easier to keep a tiny work space organized.
But in the case personal belongings are overflowing, consider organizing them in a way that does not crowd the workspace. In my situation, I store personal items in boxes and bins, rendering them out of sight. With this method, the room provides an atmosphere which feels neat and spacious.
Outdoor Space: Expanding Your Tiny Home
Residing in a tiny house also does not mean disregarding the outdoors.
If you are fortunate to have some outdoor space, you can easily further extend your little living space. I personally appreciated having a little outdoor area as it helped me enjoy clean air while having a place to relax or entertain my guests without feeling constricted inside.
All It took was a couple of foldable chairs and a small portable table to set up a cozy outdoor lounge.
Not only did this help alleviate space indoors, but it also offered a getaway whenever I wanted to escape for some peace.
For those who live in tiny homes or small places, an outdoor space is profoundly beneficial. It is like having an addition room without walls giving the perception of more space.
